Ses Illetes

The beach that made Formentera famous

Ses Illetes

A strip of white sand on the Trucadors peninsula with shallow turquoise water on both sides and the island of Espalmador at the end. It is the beach every Formentera photo is taken on.

The short answer

Ses Illetes is on the Trucadors peninsula at the northern tip of Formentera, 3 km from the port of La Savina and inside the Ses Salines natural park, which is why cars pay to enter and numbers are limited. The water is shallow and calm on the west side, and the beach continues north to Es Pas, where Espalmador is a short boat hop away. From La Savina it is 10 minutes by bike or scooter, and most day boats from Ibiza anchor right here.

The peninsula is barely a hundred metres wide in places, so you can swim on the calm west side in the morning and cross to the open east side, Llevant beach, in the afternoon. At the northern end the sand runs out into Es Pas, the shallow crossing to Espalmador that people wade at low sea. Wading is discouraged because of the current, so the safe crossing is by boat.

By sea this is the anchorage every Ibiza charter aims for: white sand bottom, three metres of water and the beach bars within swimming distance. It is where we send everyone who books a day boat to Formentera.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get to Ses Illetes from La Savina?

Ten minutes by bike or scooter along the port road, or the summer bus. Cars need to pay the park fee and places are limited.

Is there an entry fee for Ses Illetes?

For vehicles, yes, in summer, because the beach is inside the Ses Salines natural park. On foot or by bike it is free.

Can I anchor at Ses Illetes?

Yes, on the sandy bottom outside the swimming buoys. Anchoring on posidonia seagrass is banned and patrolled, so stick to the sand.

Can I walk to Espalmador from Ses Illetes?

The Es Pas channel is shallow but has currents and the authorities advise against wading. Take a boat, it is a few minutes.

Is Ses Illetes good for children?

The west side is shallow, sandy and calm most days, so yes. Bring shade, there is none.

Where do the Ibiza day boats stop?

Almost all of them anchor off Ses Illetes or Espalmador for lunch and the swim. It is the standard Formentera day from Ibiza.
