Cala Saona

The west cove and the sunset

Cala Saona

A 140 metre cove of white sand between red rock cliffs, the only sheltered beach on the west side of Formentera. It faces Ibiza and Es Vedra, which is why the sunset here is the best on the island.

The short answer

Cala Saona is on the west coast of Formentera, about 5 km from Sant Francesc and 7 km from the port of La Savina, a 15 minute ride by scooter or bike. It is a small cove, roughly 140 metres of sand, closed by low red cliffs on both sides, with one hotel and a couple of restaurants. People come for the afternoon and the sunset, when the sun drops behind Es Vedra across the channel.

The cove is closed on both sides by cliffs of red clay and rock that glow at the end of the day. Paths lead along the top to small platforms above the sea used for swimming and for watching the sun go down. The water is shallow and sandy, calm whenever the wind is not from the west.

For a boat it is the natural last stop of a Formentera day: anchor off the beach, swim, and watch the sun set behind Es Vedra before the run back to Ibiza in the last light.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get to Cala Saona?

From La Savina by bike, scooter or car through Sant Francesc, about 15 minutes. There is a summer bus too.

Is Cala Saona good for the sunset?

It is the best sunset spot on Formentera. The cove faces west toward Ibiza and Es Vedra.

Can I anchor a boat at Cala Saona?

Yes, in calm weather from the east or south. With a westerly wind the cove is exposed and boats move to Ses Illetes.

Is there parking at Cala Saona?

A free car park above the beach. It is full by midday in August.

Are there restaurants at Cala Saona?

Two beach restaurants and the hotel. Book for sunset dinner in summer.

Is Cala Saona better than Ses Illetes?

Different. Ses Illetes is the long white beach and the day boat anchorage. Cala Saona is small, sheltered and the sunset cove.
