Ibiza town and Talamanca
Ibiza town is the only place on the island where you can walk to everything: Dalt Vila, the harbour restaurants, the ferry to Formentera and the Pacha side of the marina. Rooms are the most expensive on the island and parking is hard, so it suits people who plan not to drive much. Talamanca is the bay just across the marina, a 20 minute walk or a 5 minute taxi, with a calmer beach and lower rates.
Playa d'en Bossa
The longest beach on the island and the base of the superclubs Ushuaia and Hi Ibiza. It is close to the airport, loud in the evening and busy all day. Good for a party week, less good for a family who wants to sleep early. Villas around Sant Jordi and Sant Josep give you the same 10 minute drive with a quiet night.
Santa Eulalia and the east
The east coast town most families choose. A long promenade of restaurants, a marina, calm water and short drives to Cala Llonga, Es Canar and the hippy markets. It is central enough that the north and Ibiza town are each about 20 minutes away.
Sant Antoni and the west
Sant Antoni has the cheapest beds, the sunset strip with the classic bars and the boats to Cala Bassa and Cala Comte. The town centre is a young crowd in summer. Stay slightly outside, towards Cala Gracio or Sant Agusti, if you want the west coast without the noise.
The north
Sant Joan, Sant Miquel, Portinatx and the villages around them are the rural Ibiza of fincas, pine hills and small coves. You need a car here, the nearest supermarket can be 15 minutes away, and that is exactly why people book it. Agroturismos and villas with a pool are the usual stay.
Formentera
A separate island, 30 minutes by ferry from Ibiza town, with no airport and no big hotels. Houses in Sant Francesc, Es Pujols and around Cala Saona, rented by the week, are the classic way to stay. Bikes and scooters cover most of it, and a day boat from Ibiza is the alternative if you only want one day there.
Hotel or villa
Two people for a few nights: a hotel. Four or more people for a week: a villa or a house with a pool almost always costs less per person, and you eat at home some nights. How much does a night in Ibiza cost in August?
Indicative rates for a double room in August run from about EUR 100 in Sant Antoni to EUR 250 or more in Ibiza town and the northern agroturismos. Villas with a pool for six to eight people start around EUR 500 a night in high season. All prices depend on the week and how early you book.
When is the best time to stay in Ibiza?
June and September. The sea is warm, the clubs and beach clubs are open, and rooms cost a third less than in August. May and October are quieter, with cooler water and some venues closed.
How many nights do you need in Ibiza?
Five to seven nights covers the island: one day for Ibiza town, one boat day, one for the west coast coves, one for the north and one day trip to Formentera. A weekend only works if you stay in one area and do not try to see everything.
How do you get from the airport to each area?
By taxi it is about 15 minutes to Ibiza town or Playa d'en Bossa, 25 minutes to Santa Eulalia or Sant Antoni and 40 minutes to Portinatx. The airport bus line 10 goes to Ibiza town. For Formentera you go to the port in Ibiza town and take the 30 minute ferry.
Is Ibiza town worth the higher price?
Yes if you plan to eat out every night, visit Dalt Vila and take the ferry to Formentera, because you walk to all three. No if your week is about beaches and coves, because you will be driving out every morning and paying to park when you come back.
Is a villa better than a hotel in Ibiza?
For four or more people staying a week, usually yes: the price per person is lower, you get a pool and a kitchen, and the quiet at night is real. For a couple staying three nights a hotel is simpler, and you avoid needing a car for every meal.
Do you need a car if you stay in Santa Eulalia?
Not every day. The town, the promenade and the beach are walkable and there are buses to Ibiza town and Es Canar. For the northern coves, Cala d'Hort and the west coast you do need a car, or a boat day instead.
