Ibiza Town

Capital and port

Ibiza Town

Eivissa is the island capital, its main port and the walled old town of Dalt Vila. Ferries to Formentera leave from here, so it is the natural base for anyone who wants to mix the city with the sea.

The short answer

Ibiza Town (Eivissa in Catalan) sits on the south east coast and holds the airport road, the ferry port and Dalt Vila, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999. People come for the old town, the marina restaurants and the boats to Formentera, which take about 30 minutes from the port. From the airport it is a 15 minute taxi ride.

Dalt Vila is the walled upper town, climbed through the Portal de ses Taules gate and finished at the cathedral on top. Below it, La Marina and Sa Penya are the old fishermen's quarters, now bars and shops. The modern port on the other side of the bay is where the Formentera ferries and most charter boats dock.

If you rent a boat here you leave straight into the Formentera channel, which is the most photographed water in the islands. If you rent a car, plan on driving out early: the ring road fills in July and August from mid morning.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ibiza Town worth staying in?

Yes if you want restaurants, the old town and the Formentera ferries on foot. It is noisier than the north and villas near town cost more, but you save driving every night.

How do I get from the airport to Ibiza Town?

Taxi takes about 15 minutes and the L10 bus runs to the port. A rental car picked up at the airport is the usual choice if you are staying outside town.

Can I rent a boat directly in Ibiza Town?

Yes. Marina Ibiza, Marina Botafoch and the old port all have charter boats, from small licence free boats to crewed yachts. Tell us dates and group size on WhatsApp and we send options.

How long is the ferry from Ibiza Town to Formentera?

About 30 minutes on the fast ferries. Several companies run the route and in summer there are departures through the day.

Where do I park in Ibiza Town?

Inside Dalt Vila you cannot, and the streets around the port fill early. The paid car parks by the port and at Vara de Rey are the safe bet.

Is Dalt Vila free to visit?

Walking the walls and streets is free. The cathedral and the museums inside have their own hours and tickets.
