Formentera is the smallest inhabited Balearic island, about 83 square kilometres, 4 km south of Ibiza across the Es Freus channel. It has no airport: ferries from Ibiza port take 30 to 35 minutes to La Savina, the only harbour. People come for Ses Illetes, Cala Saona and the beaches of Migjorn, and most of the island is flat enough to cycle. Sant Francesc is the capital and Es Pujols the only resort.

The island is a long flat strip with two ends. The north is the Trucadors peninsula with Ses Illetes and Llevant beaches and Espalmador beyond. The south is the La Mola plateau with the lighthouse and the cliffs. In between sit the port of La Savina, the capital Sant Francesc, the resort of Es Pujols and the long beach of Migjorn on the south coast, plus Cala Saona on the west. The green roads, marked cycling and walking routes, connect it all.
Most people see it as a day trip from Ibiza, and by private boat that day is the best one of the holiday. The ones who stay a week rent a house and a scooter and swim somewhere new every morning.
