Sant Josep

The municipality with the best coves

Sant Josep

A village at the foot of Sa Talaia, the highest hill on the island, and a municipality that runs the whole south and west coast. Most of the coves people fly to Ibiza for are inside it.

The short answer

Sant Josep (San Jose) is a small inland village 13 km west of Ibiza Town, but the municipality of the same name covers 80 beaches and coves including Cala Comte, Cala Bassa, Cala Jondal, Cala d'Hort, Ses Salines and the view of Es Vedra. People stay here for the villas in the hills and the 15 minute drive to any of those beaches. The airport is inside the municipality, 15 minutes from the village.

Sa Talaia is 475 metres high and the walk from the village to the top takes about an hour, with the whole west coast and Formentera in view. Below it the municipality splits into three faces: the west coast coves (Cala Comte, Cala Bassa, Cala Tarida, Cala Vedella), the south west with Cala d'Hort and Es Vedra, and the south with Cala Jondal, Sa Caleta and the Ses Salines beaches.

This is the part of Ibiza where a villa makes most sense. The hills between the village and the coast hold most of the island's rental houses, and with a car you reach a different cove every day without ever touching the Ibiza Town ring road.
